HAVE ME AS YOUR LIFE COACH
What is Jungian Life Coaching?
The term life coach can sound a little vague or general at first. Allow me to share a little explanation. Life coaching is a type of space where we invite questions to open up possibilities to help you navigate life. Have you ever visited a guidance councillor when you were in high school to help you pick the right program for college? Life coaching is a kind of guidance councillor that curates a space to assist you in helping achieve a specific goal that you would like to pursue.
In the lens of Jungian Psychology, we look at coaching your life from Carl Jung’s process of “individuation.” He describes that individuation can be defined as an “achievement of self-actualization through a process of integrating the conscious and the unconscious.” In other words, we want to bring awareness into parts that we have left behind, unconscious habits that keep us locked in our old patterns and integrate emotions to help us make choices from our true selves.
In ways that I view it, life coaching is a process of whole-heartedly accepting ourselves, a process of tapping into into the space of living life fully, confidently and authentically.
Why would one need Life Coaching? What is the value here?
Is there a specific goal that you would like to pursue that you feel stuck in? Whether you would like to start a business, make money doing what you love, to find a ‘soulmate’, to start a creative project or find confidence speaking in public or showing up online, working with a life coach can be very rich and profound.
To be honest with you, I believe that everything in life is interconnected. In the process of touching upon this goal, there will be things that life will throw at you, whether it will be fears, doubts, confusion, insecurities and my work here as a life coach is to not only be your cheerleader, in fact I will never advise you what you should do, but rather I will open spaces for you for inquiry, gain insight and integrate so we can line up your cards and make moves that best serves your highest good. That’s where I think having life coaches can become great hand rails to help you take steps forward.

How does Life Coaching work?
The diagram above is Carl Jung’s Model of the Psyche. Most of our lives, we live inside the circle of our Persona (which is characteristics, traits and patterns that we show to the world or how we like people to perceive us). What lives in the Shadow can be parts of ourselves that we have rejected or left behind simply because society has deemed it ‘unacceptable.’ The shadow can be negative or positive traits (ie. it can be talents you had in the past that you were bullied for). And the Shadow (which carries the opposite traits of our persona) shows up usually when we are met with a strong emotional charge, whether we are triggered or feeling really off our tracks. What happens for most of us is that we can spend many years living through our persona, defending who we are and what we have built ourselves to become while simultaneously rejecting the shadow parts of ourselves. And what happens here is that the more energy we put defending our persona, the more we can compress the shadow. And over time, like an explosive bomb, the shadow can blow up in our faces, letting this emotional charge run the show.
Let me give you an example. Take “Mr. Polite Guy” as our persona. Someone who has lived their life being over-the-top nice to everyone, to the point where he is serving everyone’s needs except for his own needs. And what he is actually doing here over time is neglecting parts in himself that needs care, compressing the shadow parts of himself which is the unrefined, rude & impolite traits. When his tolerance cup gets full, there will come to a point that his partner will point out his impoliteness (shadow self), which will turn into a trigger and an emotional charge that can lead to a conflict.
What we will be working with in Life Coaching here is the process of tapping into our True Self, by welcoming the process of integrating our shadows instead of rejecting them, so we can jump into navigating life from this space of wholeness. It is important to note that our True Self indicates that we are neither our persona or our shadow. This process takes time to uncover and process so we can make decisions from a place of ego or from a place of the true-self.
What’s my personal story? How did I meet this work?
I have been teaching dance to people for over 12 years from ages 5 - 65+ and across the world. Throughout the years I have grown to understand many ways of relating to others. As what they say, every light casts a shadow. And the more light you project, the more shadow it casts. As I share my passions and love to everyone with no boundaries during the pandemic, I was simultaneously rejecting shadow parts of myself, in which I did not give space to express my rage, set strong boundaries or feeling into my own fears about COVID-19.
Over time, I have judged emotions like grief, shame and fear as ‘negative’ and ‘bad’ and my people-pleasing complex continued to lock me into stuck and stagnant patterns. This binary way of categorizing got me to reject myself, sabotaging myself unknowingly. My fears of rejection shows up in the space as I project my rage and frustration towards my environment. Hitting an emotional rock bottom, I met Carl Jung’s work and started my process of “individuation” with shadow-work.
I further learned that when we inspire more goodness into people’s lives, it is vital to do shadow-work so we can show up fully and recognize our patterns and ways in which we drain out our energy unknowingly. As a result of doing this work over time, I learn to create space and allowance to hold for conflict, negative feedback, negotiation, constructive criticism, opportunities to set healthy boundaries and sharing my work from a place of authenticity rather than from a textbook.
And that is why I am drawn to this work. It has helped me greatly navigate life authentically and truthfully.

What is the difference between Life Coaching and Movement Mentorship?
This is a very good question. There is a big difference between my work as a life coach and a movement mentor/dance teacher. Both serve to assist you discover many ways to ‘come back home’ into the true self. As a dance teacher, I am guiding you through a process of discovering the body to help you enrich your dance vocabulary through expressions that are authentic to my life’s work and personal experience. As a life coach, the guidance is done a lot through your input, your process and sharing. I provide the space of active listening and invite questions to offer possibilities. In my dance classes, I do most of the talking and guidance whereas in my life coaching practice, you will be doing most of the talking and I will be providing questions to help shape where we can go. We might go through visualizations or movement meditations during the process to assist your process of integration.

“Own YOur Creative Mess of A Masterpiece”
You have a specific goal in mind and you’re looking for a life coach to assist you in the process to taking courage. Whether you are looking for your life partner, opening a new business, cultivating richness in your work or sharing your work from an authentic place, I am here to create the space for opportunities to help you achieve it. Mess and masterpiece usually do not go hand in hand with each other.
In my experience in Social Media, we see a lot of what we perceive as “perfection” from filters, to professional edits, to Canva templates and textbook grade captions. And what happens when this shows up in the space, is that it can create certain expectations, a level of standard, a way of comparing in terms of how we “must” show up. With this mentality, it completely can take us out of our groove as we loop into thoughts such as “I’m not ready to post my work because it’s not as pretty as X’s post,” “I don’t want to post my work because I don’t know what to write for the caption.” I have been there many times when my inner saboteur has blocked me from showing up as I am.
Can I ask you this— What is the potential here if the thing you fear the most is the very thing you need to show up? What if facing your fears is the part of the artistic process of meeting yourself truly?
Rather than following our perception of what it means to create a ‘masterpiece,’ how can we look into the core of our own mess as part of our artistic process? I believe that life is nothing but a creative mess of a masterpiece. For instance, I believe expressing our rage can teach us set healthy boundaries, expressing our chaos can teach us structure, expressing our noise can teach us the importance of silence and embracing our weird can teach us authentic connections. It is a continuous artistic process, a work-in-progress that we constantly show up to, a level of commitment to the beauty of creating something magnificent, honest and touchingly unique.
We will unpack through this work to remind you what a work of art you are to simply exist.
How can we create space within ourselves so we can respond to life with expressions that simply transcends?
Triggers to become great treasures for insight and creative compass.
Let the world gasp in awe with your imprint as you own your creative mess of a masterpiece in this thing we call life.
TESTIMONIALS:
“I can attest to Alvin’s gifting as a life coach. When we’re in a coaching container Alvin is intuitive, insightful, and supportive, but I find SO MUCH CLARITY!” - Melissa, life coach classmate
“I have known Alvin for over 10 years and have worked with him in many capacities. He shines light on every path he walks and deeply touches everyone he meets. I have personally witnessed his ability to heal people through movement and dance, and I am thrilled to witness his growth and transformation into the role of life coach and jungian practitioner. Now, as a client and student of Alvin’s I can share my experience, not only as a dancer and artist in his presence, but as a person, working outside the scope of dance, Alvin has helped me overcome many emotional roadblocks, trauma responses, and toxic patterns. In short, Alvin has given me the tools to continue to put my best, most authentic foot forward in life.
Together, Alvin and I have worked on integrating my shadow via shadow work, manifesting the reality I want to be living in, managing all of my artistic mediums and transforming them into profitable work, and through his coaching I have been given the tools to look at my role in my own suffering which has been both humbling and eye opening, in turn, I have gained the confidence to delve deeper into shadow work.
I was astounded by how quickly I was able to feel a difference in how I was managing my emotions from day to day, and how things I had been working on for a long time were finally falling into place. Alvin’s teachings have become part of my daily process and continual healing. Alvin’s work is life changing, I say that with absolute sincerity and wholehearted gratitude for him and his what he does. Alvin is truly a gift, and a light in my life.” - Jasmine Melrose, client
