SUPPORT MY ARTISTIC JOURNEY

MY STORY:

I grew up in The Philippines until I was about 14 years old. Living in a third world country, I was brought up to work hard so I can find a stable career that will be able to support my future. Unfortunately back then, being an artist was not considered a stable career to pursue. In 2005, my family migrated to Toronto, Canada. Living in Canada gave me platform to pursue my passion for the arts and support my career as a dance artist, educator, choreographer and photographer. With the help from Canada Council of the Arts and Ontario Arts Council, I was able to pursue the biggest dream as a dance artist, to be the First Certified Gaga Teacher in Toronto.

I am proud to be a living testament that with hard work and effort, you can achieve anything you want in life.

In this moment, I have a big passion to give back to my home country. I want to create opportunities for performance, dance education and dialogue with the Filipino dance community that is ever so thriving.

For my friends, family, fellow dance advocates and long-standing supporters of my work, I welcome you, with great warmth, my arts outreach initiative:

ALVIN COLLANTES PHILIPPINES PROJECT: ‘BALIKBAYAN’

“Balikbayan” is a Filipino word referring to a Filipino returning to the Philippines after spending time in another country. This program refers to this definition as it relates to the idea of returning home to bring back a toolbox full of resources, experiences and information on honing their craft in dance. For the first time in 15 years, I visited The Philippines as a dance artist and educator. I taught Gaga to students of The University of The Philippines, Guang Ming College, AirDance, UP Dance Company, Ballet Philippines, Daloy Dance Company and Contemporary Dance Network Association. With great gratitude, I was able to reveal my personal experiences, give back my artistic knoweldge and share my dream with Filipinos who are striving to pursue their artistry.
